How the Coronavirus adds to Work Stress

TDW - Hypnotherapy Harrogate - help with work stress

With the coronavirus still a major disruption to life as we know it, many people are having to change the way they work. You may be fortunate enough to be able to work from home. Although not without its challenges - especially if you have dodgy internet, inquisitive pets or children - spare a thought for those who have gone back to buildings.

If the behaviour of people out and about is anything to go by, there are those who just aren't taking it seriously. Not washing hands or using hand sanitiser. Getting closer than 1 metre (very difficult to socially distance in lifts especially). Refusing to use face coverings. Touching surfaces and objects with no regard to getting or spreading covid-19. Leaving their home even if they have mild symptoms or know they have been in contact with someone who has the virus. Forgetting that the virus is still a threat and reverting to pre-covid actions.

All this adds tremendously to work stress. Even if you aren't afraid of getting the virus yourself, you probably come into contact with someone who can't afford to get it.

If you, or someone in your home bubble, are at risk there are a few things you can do:

Speak up - if going to work is causing major stress, panic attacks or fear - then discuss this with your superiors or HR. Hygiene strategies should have been implemented but if they aren't adequate or not being adhered to then something needs to be done.

Protect yourself - don't feel self-conscious if you are the only one wearing a facemask, gloves or overalls - others don't know your circumstances. Bring your own sanitiser and/or antibac, especially when using the bathroom. People touch walls, handrails, light switches, water dispensers, vending machines, lift buttons, toilet flushes, door handles etc. having your own hand sanitiser readily available will help your mental health.

Bring your own food and drink - this reduces the risk of contamination.

At the end of the day do something that helps you relax for at least 15 minutes. This could be listening to music, exercise, meditation, catching up with family or friends, anything healthy to reduce cortisol levels and de-stress.
